Background of the Study
Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day, providing essential nutrients needed for cognitive function and sustained energy levels. Studies have shown that regular breakfast consumption improves attention span, memory retention, and overall academic performance among school children. However, skipping breakfast is a common practice, particularly in low-income households where food insecurity is prevalent.
In Taraba State, many students attend school without eating breakfast due to factors such as poverty, time constraints, and lack of awareness about its importance. Skipping breakfast can lead to reduced concentration, fatigue, and lower academic achievement. Despite global recommendations advocating for breakfast consumption, there is limited research on its direct impact on students' academic performance in Taraba State. This study aims to investigate the relationship between breakfast consumption, concentration levels, and academic success among students in the state.
Statement of the Problem
Poor dietary habits, particularly breakfast skipping, are increasingly affecting students' cognitive abilities and school performance. Many students in Taraba State attend school on an empty stomach, leading to low energy levels, reduced concentration, and poor engagement in classroom activities. While existing literature highlights the importance of breakfast, there is a lack of localized studies examining its impact on student performance in Taraba State. This study seeks to assess the effects of breakfast consumption on students’ concentration and academic achievements.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the relationship between breakfast consumption and concentration levels among students in Taraba State.
To assess the impact of breakfast consumption on students' academic performance.
To identify barriers to regular breakfast intake and recommend solutions.
Research Questions
How does breakfast consumption influence students’ concentration in class?
What is the relationship between breakfast consumption and academic performance?
What factors contribute to breakfast skipping among students in Taraba State?
Research Hypotheses
Students who consume breakfast regularly have higher concentration levels.
There is a significant positive relationship between breakfast consumption and academic performance.
Socioeconomic and cultural factors influence students' breakfast consumption habits.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on secondary school students in Taraba State, assessing their breakfast habits and academic performance. Limitations include variations in students’ home environments and dietary reporting accuracy.
